Glenn J.R. Whitman, M.D. is Professor of Surgery and Director of the Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
Dr. Whitman graduated from Harvard College in 1974, following which he was the Harvard Scholar to Cambridge University from 1974 to 1975. After medical school and general surgical training at the University of Pennsylvania, he followed Dr. Alden Harken to the University of Colorado where he finished his general and cardiothoracic surgical training. Dr. Whitman has served as the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Denver Veteran’s Administration Hospital, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, as well as Chief of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Maryland.
In 2009, Dr. Whitman was recruited to Johns Hopkins to be the Director of the Cardiovascular Surgery ICU and to oversee the performance improvement and quality assurance programs for cardiac surgery. He has just recently stepped down as the Chair of The Society of Thoracic Surgery National Workforce on Critical Care, a position he held for 6 years. He has over 250 peer reviewed publications, over 40 book chapters, and has been on the planning committee of the annual STS and AATS meetings for many years. Dr. Whitman is most proud of the many residents and medical students he has mentored over the past 35 years, many of whom have gone on to be leaders and educators in the field of cardiothoracic surgery.
