Dr. James Kirklin is Director, Kirklin Institute for Research in Surgical Outcomes (KIRSO), Professor of Surgery, and former Director of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Kirklin was Principal Investigator of the $15 million NIH-funded national Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (INTERMACS) from 2006-2017 and currently is Director of the Data Coordinating Center for STS INTERMACS. His research interests involve cardiac transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, and Congenital cardiac surgery. Dr. Kirklin is past President (2009-2010) of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT). He served as Editor of the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation from 2000 – 2009. In 2020, he was honored by the ISHLT with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
