Karen deKay is a Perioperative Practice Specialist at AORN and is certified in perioperative nursing and infection control. She is currently updating the AORN Guideline for Environmental Cleaning. Her most recent experience was developing and standardizing environmental cleaning practices for both operating room and sterile processing departments in ten hospitals which were part of a large healthcare system in southeast Texas. Additionally, she has over twenty years’ experience in developing education and evaluating basic operating room practices; basic infection control procedures specifically to environment of care, highly infectious patients and prevention of surgical site infections; quality improvement processes (i.e., robust process improvement, lean six-sigma); and on-line learning module development.
