Marilyn Gerber, MA.BS.RN. is a pioneer in the field of Complementary & Integrative Medicine. In 1979, prior to her nursing career, Marilyn invited NIH scientists in Washington, DC and the White House to a dinner party to introduce Complementary physicians from Mill Valley, California. She arranged for the Washington Post and Newsweek to cover this event. Even more incredible was the White House actually called her to apologize that no one could attend that evening! This meeting led to the formation of NIH National Council of Complementary and Alternative Medicine known as NCAM and recently changed to the NIH-Council of Complementary & Integrative Health-CCIH (try to pronounce that!)
Her passion for Complementary/Integrative Medicine came naturally to her as she was born a dual US/Swiss citizen and raised in Europe, Asia and US where she was exposed to holistic medicine, meditation, yoga, homeopathy, aromatherapy, music therapy, whole foods, Ayurvedic medicine, Tai Chi, Reiki, Herbal & Medicinal Teas. In her first profession as a design/textile engineer in fashion, she dug deeper into integrative practices as she worked throughout Europe, Asia and the US which lead her to live in San Francisco, a multi-culturally society with Buddhist temples, Chinatown/Japantown and the pioneers, scientists/physicians in alternative health. In 1980, she co-founded Planetree which is considered to be the finest medical model in the world by Donald Berwick MD, former Director of Medicare/Medicaid under President Obama and founder of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, (IHI). Today, over 800 hospitals worldwide practice the Planetree Model.
She is one of the top 100 allopathic nurses in ICU, ER,Trauma, OR, PACU, RN Case Manager Home Health & Hospice and has worked in 6 states in over 45 healthcare facilities in order to testify on US Healthcare! She is part of an original group of nurses who cared for the first HIV/AIDS patients at San Francisco General Hospital and championed for their rights to receive medical care at all Bay Area hospitals. She went on to study every integrative modality with the finest mentors in Wuhan, China, Greece, France, Germany, Switzerland, Colorado, San Francisco. In 2011, she trained the Department of Health on Alternative modalities in Malta during Arab Spring and championed for the African refugees being held in “camps”! She worked during the two Gulf Wars at Oaknoll Naval Hospital & Walter Reade Medical Center in ICU, She is a military “brat” and her “people” are Veterans, her home are Veterans hospitals.
She has been a Legal Nurse Consultant for 21 years and is a relentless activist against nurse bullying, violence against nurses in the workplace and offers testimony before the National Council of Medicine and NIH on moral distress of nurses and physicians, Opioid Crisis, and Medical Cannabis. Activistic/Disrupter is her alias!
She has taught at 5 colleges, a scholar/researcher, Phi Kappa Phi. She has represented Integrated Healthcare Practices -Specialty Assembly, (IHP) for AORN as Educator/Editor since 2012 and Chair in 2021.
