Project manager OR
MCL hospital
Burdaard, Friesland, Netherlands
Charmaine Betzema-Wagenaar, BS, RORA, has been working in ORs throughout the Netherlands for over 30 years. She has worked many years as a volunteer for the Dutch OR organization, the LVO, where she served as president. She was also the treasurer of the European Operating Room Nurses Association (EORNA). She is currently an OR project manager at Hospital Medisch Centrum Leeuwarden and has done many presentations about patient safety, like "What You Use You Can Lose," because patient safety is a goal for her! On other goal is the Green OR. It is ironic that our efforts in hospitals to improve the health of patients contribute detrimentally to the health of the ecosystem. Waste from the operating room often undergoes high-energy processing to make it safe for disposal. In fact, a single operation may produce more waste than a family of 4 produces in a week. It is important that as healthcare providers we not only care for our patients but for the well-being and future of our environment. Pollution generated by disposal of our surgical waste can ultimately sicken our communities – those same individuals we are caring for. While significant efforts have been made in recycling and in the reduction of waste in the OR and our Hospitals, we are far from being done with our work on this issue.
