Mary Jo Steiert, BSN, RN, has been a practicing perioperative nurse for over 30 years. She has been a staff nurse in the scrub, circulating, and first assistant roles, as well as educator, manager, and director of perioperative services. Mary Jo was the 2007-2008 national AORN President, and has served as an AORN Board member and Secretary. During her presidency, she represented perioperative nursing and AORN at the WHO's Second Safe Surgery Saves Lives Campaign Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, and was one of eight nurses who assisted in the development of the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist.
