Spencer L. Byrum is a pilot, an author and internationally-known speaker who is CEO of HRS Consulting, Inc., a company he specifically founded to enhance individual and team decision making in high risk industries. Mr. Byrum’s specialty is taking lessons learned in aviation and developing innovative process improvements and training for professions in which people need to make critical decisions in a stressful, demanding environment. He is an expert at transforming organizational thinking using High Reliability Organization (HRO) best practices to improve outcomes, decrease risk, increase efficiency, enhance compliance, and improve safety. He is the author of the highly-acclaimed book, High Reliability for a Highly Unreliable World, published in February 2108.
Mr. Byrum has spoken extensively on the subject of human performance in demanding, time-critical environments. He has developed and delivered training to over 100,000 people for healthcare clients ranging from HCA to Vanderbilt Medical Center to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to the Washington Health Foundation. He has been a keynote speaker at hundreds of national and international conferences and has developed and delivered comprehensive training programs for the Veterans Health Administration, CHCA, State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Corporation, MDAdvantage Insurance, State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Company, The St Paul, SWHR, Kaiser Permanente, Stanford Health, Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA, Methodist/ LeBonheur Healthcare, Stryker, Storz and Smith&Nephew which reduced errors and improved performance. He has worked with the Air Force Armstrong Research Labs to collect data and performance markers for Human Factors training and is a member of the Aviation Industry CRM Developers Group. Most recently, Mr. Byrum has led the Risk Assessment and Shipboard Firefighting Operations Review for the Maritime Safety and Fire Association, USDA Biorisk Management training and his company has recently won 10 contracts for organizational transformation including a billion dollar contract to transform healthcare in the Veterans Health Administration.
