Sofya H. Asfaw MD FACS is an Assistant Professor of Surgery of Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. She specializes in Trauma Surgery, Critical Care and Emergency General Surgery. She completed a residency in General Surgery at Cleveland Clinic and fellowships in Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care at The University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Asfaw is Vice Chair for Wellness and Diversity for the Department of General Surgery, Cleveland Clinic. She also serves as the Associate Clerkship Director for Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Associate Program Director for the General Surgery Residency at Cleveland Clinic and the Medical Director of the Trauma/Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital. Additionally, Dr. Asfaw has been actively involved in healthcare sustainability initiatives for years and serves as the Fellowship Director for the Kenneth Lee Memorial Fellowship – a fellowship dedicated to healthcare sustainability with a focus on Greening the OR – and is a founding member of Cleveland Clinic’s Greening the OR Committee. She has also given numerous lectures locally and nationally on healthcare sustainability and Greening the OR.
