Dr. Carole “Gert” Mayes is the Manager of Nursing Excellence, co-chair of the Institutional Review Board, and per diem operating room staff nurse at Rutland Regional Medical Center (RRMC) in Vermont. Gert has over 30 years of experience as a clinical perioperative nurse and over 10 years of experience as an Operating Room (OR) and Sterile Processing Clinical Educator. She has presented multiple poster presentations at the Association of PeriOperative Nursing’s annual expo and research findings as a podium presenter at regional, national, and international conferences. In 2020, she published her study A Grounded Theory of Intraoperative Team Members’ Decision Making Regarding Surgical Attire Guideline Adherence and Factors Influencing Perioperative Nurse Turnover: A Classic Grounded Theory Study in the AORN Journal and has a follow-up study in progress. Currently, she currently serves on eChapter’s Board of Directors, as the Co-Chair of the Nurse Scientist Specialty Assembly of AORN., and as the secretary for Sigma Theta Tau Omega Mu Chapter-at-Large. Perioperative nursing and enhancing the evidence behind the nursing specialty and nursing in general continue to be her lifelong passion.
