Kathy W. Beydler, RN, MBA, CNOR, CASC has over 30 years of experience in PeriOperative services as an OR nurse, Director of Surgical Services, Administrator, Keynote Speaker, Consultant, and Expert Witness. Kathy began her career as an educator before changing course to pursue a nursing degree. While the administrator of the largest surgery center in Memphis, Tennessee, Kathy gained her MBA, CNOR, and CASC. The combination of nursing and teaching degrees, along with her experiences as a patient, inform her healthcare philosophy and how she approaches patient care. After experiencing an elective surgery gone wrong, she received a first-hand view of how vulnerable both patients and their families are when they put their lives into the hands of healthcare providers. She says the staff can fall into performing their duties by rote, sometimes taking the process for granted, not realizing it is anything but routine from the patient's perspective. the reality is that it only takes a few minutes to make a patient comfortable by making eye contact and verbally assuring them that we will take care of them. "Whether a patient says so or not, very single one of them is afraid. The simple act of calming words and holding a patient's hand as they go to sleep makes a world of difference and shows to them the Humanity of Healthcare", says Kathy.
