Kate Ulrich, MS, BSN, RN, NEA-BC is the Assistant Vice President of Perioperative Nursing, Duke University Health system. Kate provides leadership in the areas of planning for new services and platforms, development of consistent staffing and practice standards, and strategy execution for perioperative services across DUHS. Kate began her nursing career in 1991 as a perioperative services nurse at Westchester Square Medical Center in Bronx, NY. She spent several years in progressive leadership roles serving as clinical nurse manager of perioperative services for Mt. Sinai Health System and clinical care coordinator for the hospital ambulatory surgery unit at Yale New Haven Health System. In 2011, Kate came to Duke as the clinical operations director for the Duke Ambulatory Surgery Center. After just two years, she was promoted to associate chief nursing officer of perioperative services for Duke University Hospital. In this role, she was responsible for 65 operating suites, 112 pre-op and post anesthesia care unit (PACU) beds, two short stay units, and the pre-admission testing clinics across three surgical platforms.
Kate graduated from the College of New Rochelle with her BSN, and holds a MS in health care administration from Iona College. She is currently a GE Health Management Academy Fellow for Nurse Executives. Kate is a member of the American Organization of Nurse Leaders (AONL) and the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN).
