D3 - Data to Action: Leveraging National Surveillance Data to Inform the Development of Communication Resources on COVID-19 and Pregnancy

Full Description: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is supporting multiple efforts to increase our understanding of the impact of COVID-19 on pregnant people and infants. These efforts included standing up systems to collect data on COVID-19 cases among pregnant women and infants up to 6 months of age through national case surveillance and an existing surveillance activity—Surveillance for Emerging Threats to Mothers and Babies Network (SET-NET). CDC has also used safety monitoring systems to gather and examine information about COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy. CDC has leveraged data collected as part of these efforts to inform the development of public health recommendations and communication products to address the ongoing COVID-19 needs of pregnant people, new parents, infants and clinicians and organizations who serve them.
This workshop will provide examples of how CDC leveraged different data sources to inform specific and timely public health action around COVID-19. We will explain how CDC used case surveillance and SET-NET data to develop tools for public health professionals; how accumulating COVID-19 vaccine safety data have been used to inform vaccination recommendations for people who are pregnant, recently pregnant, or might become pregnant in the future; and how CDC has used the knowledge gained to develop and compile CDC resources about pregnancy and COVID-19 into a toolkit. Presenters will provide a demonstration of available communication resources and how jurisdictions can access them. We will use an interactive component to engage participants through polls and discussion about outstanding COVID-19 needs for these populations, and what strategies and resources have been effective to inform responses to future public health emergencies beyond COVID-19.
Jurisdictions can use and tailor the available CDC COVID-19 resources and apply similar data-to-action models to inform the development of communication products to address maternal and infant health needs. Lessons learned can inform future emergency response efforts.
CDC’s COVID-19 Response Pregnancy and Infant-Linked Outcomes Team (PILOT): Kara Polen, MPH will describe how vaccine safety data on pregnancy informed the evolution of CDC’s immunization recommendations. Neha Shinde, MPH, CHES will describe the development of the COVID-19 Data Tracker resources on CDC’s pregnancy and neonatal surveillance data. Maria Rivera, MPH will demonstrate the Toolkit for Pregnant People and New Parents, its components, and discuss how jurisdictions and partners have used the resources.

Objectives: 1. Participants will gain knowledge of CDC's COVID-19 vaccination recommendations and communications materials developed for the Response to 2019 Coronavirus in pregnant people and infants. 2. Participants will gain knowledge of how they can leverage data to promote public health action through the development of resources to meet the needs of pregnant people and infants during an emergency.
