Dr. Mitchell’s career spans the spectrum from highest acuity care to health policy for primary prevention. She is board-certified in Emergency Medicine serving 20 years in the front lines at level 1 Trauma Centers. As a faculty member at the University of California Davis (1989-2005) with a joint appointment in Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics, her academic focus was the precursors to intentional injury and strategies for prevention and intervention in family violence. She is Editor-in-Chief of the textbook Intimate Partner Violence: A Health-Based Perspective. After earning her MPH, she transitioned to the California Department of Public Health and helped start the California Pregnancy Associated Mortality Review and was the principal author of the state’s first report on maternal mortality. Dr. Mitchell now serves as the Deputy Director of Family Health and oversees the Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Division, WIC and the Genetic Disease Screening Program.
