Partnering to Advance Health Equity: Working Within and Across Organizations

Full Description: The Children’s Safety Network (CSN), National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention (NCFRP), and Safe Kids Worldwide recognize the need to address child and adolescent health inequities through a systems approach that assesses current injury and violence prevention and maternal and child health programs through a health equity lens and guides public health leaders and practitioners to work both within their programs and organizations and boldly across organizations to take strategic action to reduce health inequities. Recent research and presentations on health equity have generated engaging discussion and a call to action; however, there is a need for specific guidance and actionable tools to spur progress. Our workshop will support state health departments, public health agencies, and coalitions to examine current practices, have in-depth discussions, and identify actionable steps to reduce health inequities across child and adolescent injury and violence prevention programming. Two resources will be shared: The CSN Health Equity Planner and Health Equity: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Assessment Guide for Multidisciplinary Teams. The CSN Health Equity Planner is designed to guide state health departments and organizations to focus their needs assessments, stakeholder analyses, and workforce development plans with a health equity lens. The Health Equity: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Assessment Guide for Multidisciplinary Teams is designed to produce knowledge that will equip team leaders from across organizations to support a shared understanding of the multidisciplinary team's commitments to DEI and advancing health equity in the community and identify and act on growth opportunities within multidisciplinary teams and community contexts. The Planner and Guide are being tested with pilot sites that include Safe Kids coalitions, multidisciplinary child death review teams and state health departments. Both resources were informed by and give attention to intervening at all levels of the Social-Ecological Model: Framework for Prevention, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and were reviewed by the national Children’s Safety Now Alliance. Following an introduction to health equity, these resources will be explored, presenters will share findings from the pilots, and audience members will be engaged in a discussion of how they may begin or strengthen current health equity work. Emphasis will be placed on the use of these resources to ensure a comprehensive approach to addressing health equity in communities.
