Youth Data Collection - A Modern Ethical Approach

Full Description: How do we fulfill the crucial MCH obligation of ensuring that policies and practices are impacting target populations in positive and measurable ways? One of the best methods is to collect data; but collecting and interpreting this data can be challenging when it is collected for or from youth populations. Further, it is an even greater challenge to develop data collection methods which both resonate with the unique concerns of young people today and meet these populations where they already are. Join young leaders from the inaugural Youth Voice Amplified committee at AMCHP to learn how to bridge the generational gap in data collection and turn your MCH assessments into true, robust representations of your results. The goal of this workshop is to underscore the need to engage youth as partners in the solution to problems facing young people in our society through more effective data collection. Attendees can expect to engage in self-reflection through live polling & live feedback from panelists while learning to integrate concerns specific to current youth populations & various marginalized communities within these populations with MCH/Title V goals & policies. A new data collection template developed by YVA will be debuted, and attendees will have the opportunity to ask in-depth questions about how to apply this template to their work or develop similar strategies for data collection. Panelists will also engage attendees in interactive roleplaying opportunities that demonstrate how to effectively & sensitively engage with youth participants in data collection. In addition to learning about concrete strategies for data collection, this workshop will inform and engage participants in reshaping their thinking about young people’s generational concerns, talents, & obstacles. Born after 1996, Generation Z is the most racially diverse and digitally connected population in U.S. history. Their formative years have been marked by global warming, a devastating pandemic, and the inheritance of a fragmented nation. It is crucial that MCH leaders consider how these concerns, talents, & obstacles differ from their own and learn how to implement these considerations in developing their assessments and benchmarks for efficacy. Attendees can expect to hear from panelists about their specific lived experiences with respect to these social determinants of health, and engage in robust Q&A with panelists following these shares. Ultimately, following the workshop, attendees should expect the following: an increase in familiarity with young people’s social experiences; concrete strategies for how to implement this new familiarity in improving data collection, no matter their MCH section; a robust understanding of how past generations have influenced current generational experiences & how to integrate the past and present sensitively; and a definitive action plan for implementing or developing new data collection templates geared toward youth data collection.
