Patrick McDermott was elected Norfolk County Sheriff in 2020. Since taking office 18 months ago, Sheriff McDermott has worked to expand inmate programming to include the EMPLOY program, HAZMAT certification and bloodborne pathogens certification. He has also invested in increased services to Norfolk County including a drone unit, a therapy dog, and the expansion of the agency’s 20-year old youth leadership summer program to a second location in the county. In addition, Sheriff McDermott recently co-founded the Norfolk County Public Safety Alliance with the Norfolk County District Attorney and Treasurer.
Before being elected as Sheriff, he served for 18 years as the Norfolk County Register of Probate where he focused his attention on access to justice for Norfolk County residents. Prior to that, he served three terms as Quincy City Councilor (1996-2002).
In addition to his work in government, Sheriff McDermott is a dedicated community leader and volunteer. He is an active member of the Bar Association of Norfolk County and multiple local service organizations, including the Quincy Chamber of Commerce, Massachusetts Bar Association, and Quincy Rotary Club.
Sheriff McDermott is a member of the Massachusetts Sheriff’s Association, the Massachusetts Body Worn Camera Task Force, the Major County Sheriff’s Association, and the National Sheriff’s Association, where he serves as a member of the Juvenile Justice Committee.
Sheriff McDermott is a graduate of BC High, Boston College, and Suffolk Law School.
