Steven Wicklander started his career in 1997 as a Detentions Deputy with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, where he worked in different capacities until retiring in 2018 as a Lieutenant. Since his retirement, Steven continues to serve the field of corrections as a Facilities Standards and Operations (FSO) Field Representative with the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC).
During his career with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, Steven worked through the ranks from Detentions Deputy, and Corporal, before promoting to Sergeant in 2004. As a Sergeant, he held various positions, including Watch Commander at the Descanso Detention Facility, Administrative Sergeant at the San Diego Central Jail, and the Detention Bureau Support Sergeant.
In 2011 Steven was promoted to Lieutenant, serving as Watch Commander at the San Diego Central Jail and Vista Detention Facility before earning a two-year assignment as Assistant Facility Commander at the Vista Detention Facility. During his time as Assistant Facility Commander, Steven assisted in developing the Veterans Moving Forward program and the Hospital Guard Unit. After completing his two-year assignment, Steven became the Facility Commander for the South Bay Detention Facility, where he operated a high-level classification Incentive-Based Housing module. Prior to his retirement in 2018, Steven transferred to his final assignment at the In-Service Training Unit, where his unit was responsible for providing annual training to over 1,200 staff.
As an FSO Field Representative, Steven serves as the Administrative and Training Coordinator. He promotes public safety by conducting inspections and evaluating agencies for compliance with Titles 15 and 24 Minimum Standards for Local Detention Facilities, provides technical assistance and best practices to local county corrections agencies, assists with developing and conducting training for FSO staff and other local partners, and teaches at the Court and Correctional Security Seminar for the California State Sherriff’s Association.
