Tyson Nelson has been with the Los Angeles County Counsel's Office since 2012. Originally assigned to the Dependency Division handling child welfare cases, since 2018 he has been assigned to the Justice & Safety Division of County Counsel. He advises the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) compliance teams at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the Probation Department. Since 2020, he has advised the newly formed Office of Alternatives to Incarceration (ATI) within the CEO's office on prefile and pretrial diversion efforts, the creation of a Los Angeles re-entry fire camp, and the development of a Countywide mental health crisis response as an alternative to law enforcement for individuals in mental health crisis. He also supervises litigation, provides general advice to the Sheriff's Department Custody Division, and advises on the County settlement agreements over the jails.
