Professional Summary
Miguel H. Cortez is native to Los Angeles County and has 21 years of law enforcement experience with Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from California State University of Long Beach. He is a Federal Bureau of Investigations certified Hostage Crisis Negotiator.
Throughout his career, Deputy Cortez has been assigned to Pitchess Detention Center East Max Facility, Twin Towers Correctional Facility, Transportation Bureau, Norwalk Patrol Station, and the Jail Mental Evaluation Team at Men’s Central Jail.
While assigned to Twin Towers, he worked on the high observation floor with the acutely mentally ill and suicidal inmates.
During his time with the Jail Mental Evaluation Team he has developed methods to help individuals in crisis. He has attended multiple trainings by Pacific Clinics, NAMI, The California Endowment Center, and the National Institute of Corrections for mental health identification, suicide prevention, and de-escalation techniques. He also conducts briefings and trainings to other custody staff to promote awareness and safety in the jails. In 2010, he was awarded a sheriff commendation for creating a custody mental health training course.
