Karen Brown has 30 years state government experience working with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety and the Division of Motor Vehicles. She retired from public service on February 1, 2021 and is currently the Principal of Brown Training & Consulting and a community volunteer. Ms. Brown served as the Director of NC Carolina Correction Enterprises for 17 years, where she oversaw the operation of 17 different industries located at 31 plants across the state, supervising 375 staff and 2600 inmates. During her tenure, sales grew by almost 50% and implemented strategic planning, LEAN manufacturing, post-release job placement for offenders and numerous other best and promising practices. Under her direction, North Carolina Correction Enterprises grew to become the 2nd largest Correctional Industries in the United States with $97 million in annual sales.
Brown has a BA degree from the University of NC at Chapel Hill in Economics and International Studies and a MBA from Meredith College in Raleigh. In addition, Brown is a Certified Professional Manager and a graduate of the NC Department of Corrections’ Correctional Leadership Development Program.
Brown is an active volunteer in her community. She currently serves as Chair of the Wake County Public Schools Engineering and Design Academy Board; as a Guardian Ad Litem advocating for the rights of abused children and as a volunteer with the American Red Cross. Brown served on the Governor’s State Reentry Council; on the Board and Executive Committee of the National Correctional Industries Association for 12 years including the roles of President and Chairman of the Board; is a member of the American Correctional Association and a facilitator for the National Institute of Corrections.
