Carla Gallegos-Ortega has been a leader in the provision of sexual assault services in New Mexico for over twenty years. She joined the New Mexico Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs, Inc. in 2006 where she has led numerous innovative projects including multiple VAWA grants. Carla has developed a variety of diverse trainings and events including specialized training for tribal law enforcement and prosecutors on sexual assault in Indian Country. She has developed and held statewide trainings for sexual assault investigation for law enforcement and sexual assault prosecution for prosecutors. Carla is especially proud of the scholarships she has secured and awarded to law enforcement officers and prosecutors enabling them to attend national trainings on investigating and prosecuting sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking and teen dating violence cases, as well as, providing funds to law enforcement agencies to purchase equipment to support the investigations of violent crimes. In 2015, Carla was named the NMCSAP’s PREA Co-Coordinator (Prison Rape Elimination Act). In this leadership role, she focuses on pursing VAWA funding to create vital PREA trainings for PREA advocates, correctional officers and staff throughout New Mexico including county detention centers, state Department of Corrections, and youth detention facilities. Carla is also the President and Chief Executive Officer of the award-winning Sabor – an Albuquerque based company specializing in creating a collection of robust salsa products.
