12:30 PM – 2:00 PM
Location: 201A
With the rise in opiate overdoses in jails, it is essential that jails to respond quickly and correctly. This workshop focuses on two responders: custody staff and residents. In the first part of the session, Dr. Stern conducts training on the use of naloxone nasal spray for custody staff, including hands-on practice with a mannequin. This provides training for attendees and serves as a model for staff training that attendees can replicate at their agency. In the second part of Lt. Morgan and Capt. Alva describe a cutting-edge program instituted at LA County Jail wherein naloxone is placed in living units, accessible for use directly by residents. They discuss how to implement this program; the potential barriers to acceptance; what follow-up practices are needed to ensure reporting is consistent and shared among those involved in education, care, and future prevention efforts; and the preliminary data about program success.
