Dr. Joanna Melia is an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She earned her medical degree from Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and completed training in internal medicine in the Osler Program at Johns Hopkins where she also served as an chief resident. She trained in Gastroenterology and Inflammatory Bowel Disease at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is a physician-scientist with both basic and translational research programs. Her laboratory is focused on manganese homeostasis and glycosylation in Crohn's disease. She has received funding through the National Institutes of Health and the American Gastroenterological Association. Clinically, she has expertise in acute severe ulcerative colitis and GI complications of immune checkpoint inhibitors. She serves as the Associate Program Director for Research for the Johns Hopkins gastroenterology fellowship and the Program Director for the IBD fellowship at Johns Hopkins. She was recently honored by participation in the American Gastroenterological Association Future Leaders Program 2022-2023.
