The prevalence of IBD has been increasing in historically low-incidence areas of the world, such as Central America, Asia, and Africa. These newer patient populations often come from resource poor parts of the world. Patterns of disease presentation, disease course, and disease outcomes vary between racial and ethnic groups and social determinants of health have created disparities in care. IBD requires many resources to diagnose, treat and monitor the disease over the lifetime of the patient. This session aims to review some of the social determinants of health that impact IBD outcomes including health literacy as well as review how to provide culturally competent care in IBD. We will review how to optimize care for the underserved with IBD at an introductory level for our fellow audience suggesting tips for connecting to patients, obtaining medications and access to diagnostics as well as meeting these patients’ specific needs and understanding the limitations faced by the underserved patient population. We will have two short didactic sessions followed by case-based learning using real cases from our clinics in small group discussions. Each small group will be composed of fellows along with an esteemed AIBD faculty member to share ideas for managing our diverse patient population and learn from each other.
