Uma Mahadevan completed a medical degree at the SUNY Brooklyn, residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, Gastroenterology fellowship at UCSF and IBD fellowship at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Mahadevan is a proud recipient of the 2022 Sherman Prize for Excellence in Crohn’s and Colitis. Dr. Mahadevan is Professor of Medicine at UCSF, Director of the Colitis and Crohn’s Disease Center and Director of the Advanced IBD Fellowship.
Dr. Mahadevan is a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association, for whom she was Chair of IMIBD for DDW Council and Chair of the AGA National IBD Parenthood initiative. She is a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology. She is former Chair of the CCF Clinical Research Grants committee, a member of their National Scientific Advisory Committee and Taskforce on Women in IBD, and co-chair of the annual Crohn’s Colitis Congress 2020. She was co-director of the AGA Postgraduate Course 2022 and Director 2023. She was awarded the AGA IMIBD Research Mentor Award 2022.
Dr. Mahadevan was a section editor for the journal Gastroenterology and editorial board member and reviewer for several journals. Dr. Mahadevan has published original articles, abstracts, editorials, and invited reviews in such peer-reviewed journals as Gastroenterology, CGH, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, and Gut.
Dr. Mahadevan specializes in the treatment of UC, Crohn’s disease, and pouchitis. She has a particular interest in pregnancy in IBD, as well as in clinical trials of experimental therapy for both ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Her current projects include a national prospective registry of pregnancy outcomes and drug safety in women with IBD on immunosuppressive and biologic medications (PIANO) and the impact of nutritional interventions in the management of IBD.
