Joanne Prasad, D.D.S., M.P.H., is Associate Professor and Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Prasad received her D.D.S. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1995 and subsequently completed a General Practice Residency (1996) as well as a residency in oral and maxillofacial pathology (2002). She has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology since 2002. In 2018, Dr. Prasad received a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, along with a Certificate in Health Systems Leadership and Management.
Dr. Prasad currently serves as Chair of the predoctoral program Curriculum Committee. Her involvement in teaching spans multiple areas, including the biomedical sciences, behavioral sciences, and promoting person-centered care. She was the recipient and project director of two Innovation in Education grants, awarded by the University of Pittsburgh Provost’s Advisory Council on Instructional Excellence, for projects aimed at enhancing dental student interpersonal communication skills. She is also actively involved in ongoing efforts to promote a humanistic culture at her school.
Dr. Prasad has been an advocate of sex and gender health in dental education since attending her first Sex and Gender Health Education Summit in 2018. As a dental representative, she participated in the development of sex and gender health education tenets to be applied across all health professions and she is co-author of an article titled “Sex and Gender Health Educational Tenets: A Report from the 2020 Sex and Gender Health Education Summit” (Journal of Women’s Health).
Dr. Prasad is a 2016 graduate of the ADEA Summer Program for Emerging Leaders and a 2017 graduate of the ADEA Leadership Institute. She is the current Secretary of the ADEA Section on Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.
