Innovative partnerships between schools of dentistry, pharmacy, social work, and nursing were designed to promote integrated services inclusive of oral health care in an academic dental clinic setting and create interprofessional learning opportunities for the emerging workforce. Dental settings have not traditionally functioned as access points to the healthcare system; however, they can serve patients who may not otherwise seek routine healthcare. Offering multidisciplinary health services in dental settings has potential to reach unserved populations. We will describe steps for integrated, whole-health services and lessons learned for other academic health institutions to consider in developing and sustaining integrated clinical models.

Identify needs of patient population and clinical learning environment that may benefit from an interprofessional, integrated care approach.
Strategize methods to develop an integrated care model using the six steps of development presented.
Develop a “next steps” action plan for promoting integrated health models in dental settings.
