Objectives: COVID-19 has changed the teaching methods and learning experiences. Active learning has shown to increase student engagement, recall and retention of information as well as analytical and critical thinking skills. Distance learning has posed several challenges in effective active learning teaching methods. In-person learning enables the instructors to monitor both nonverbal engagement such as participant’s facial expressions and active engagements including asking questions or comments from participants. Faculties have been constantly updating themselves with the current technology in order to make the online learning experience for the dental students to be effective. Interactive quizzes can create distance teaching methods, an active learning environment for the participants. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the effectiveness of these methods on student and resident learning experience.
Methodology: Two separate surveys were created for dental students and residents during their online didactic courses to examine their learning experience. A web-based polling platform, was used to assess the student and resident learning experiences. The polls were used during the online presentations as multiple-choice, open ended questions and clickable image on radiographs. At the end of the presentations, an anonymous survey was done with the polling platform to encourage them to express their opinions and ideas without any bias or hesitations. A poll was created on a 1-5 scale: 1: Not at all effective, 2. Slightly effective, 3. Moderately effective, 4. Very effective and 5. Extremely effective. A total of 68 dental students and 31 residents participated in the survey.
Results: The survey for both the groups of participants showed approximately 90% favoring extremely to very effective experience, while about 10% of the them expressed no effect on their learning experience.
Conclusion: Our survey indicates that the use of interactive quizzes during distance learning has a positive effect on student’s learning process.
