Background: Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) are a set of tasks within a clinical specialty which a learner could be entrusted to perform without supervision once they have reached a level of competence. Originally proposed within medical education as a means to integrate competencies with clinical practice, EPAs are designed to help eliminate/decrease the knowledge gap which is commonly observed in the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate education. At the authors’ institution, curriculum development and restructuring in the undergraduate program initiated exploring the development of EPAs for pediatric dentistry.
Methods: Faculty in pediatric dentistry reviewed the standards within the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation and the institutional parameters for graduation from the undergraduate program (Doctor of Dental Surgery). The existing competencies were reviewed and distilled to develop core EPAs for pediatric dentistry. Input was sought from all faculty in pediatric dentistry to finalize the EPAs.
Results: Six core EPAs in pediatric dentistry were finalized for the graduating dentist which will be described in the poster. These form the basis for mapping the existing competencies and milestones within the existing pediatric dentistry curriculum and identifying domains where additional milestones may be needed.
Conclusion: Building trust in the competence of clinical trainees in dental education can be explored through developing a framework of EPAs.
