Objectives: The purpose of this research was to determine if motivational interviewing skills could be improved over time by implementing case presentation and self-assessment into pre-existing Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCEs).
Methods: Motivational Interviewing skills were taught in Periodontics lab to senior dental hygiene students using a learning module and video identifications. MI skills of senior dental hygiene students were then evaluated during 5 different OSCEs using the Motivational Interviewing Competency Assessment (MICA). After each OSCE, the students were asked to use self-assessment rubrics using the MICA as well. Using ANOVA data analysis, MI skills were compared over the semester.
Results: Overall improvement in MI skills were found over the semester, but specific improvement in the categories of Evoking, Guiding, and Partnering with the patient was evident from their MICA scores. Mean scores improved over all categories except Open-Ended Questions.
Conclusions: Self-assessments and evaluation through OSCEs can be used effectively to teach and improve MI skills in a clinical setting.
