Timely, open, and accessible communication is critical in building trust among faculty and administration. At present, administration at the department and school level shares information with faculty across many platforms. However, information received has been perceived to be inadequate, ill-timed, and not modeled to meet the individual needs of the faculty members.
Objectives: The goals of the project are to 1) Identify gaps in communication, 2) Recognize ways to improve quality of communication, and 3) Provide recommendations to ensure timely and open communication.
Methods: An anonymous survey will be sent using Qualtrics to full-time, part-time, and adjunct faculty at the School of Dentistry. Faculty teaching predoctoral, dental hygiene, advanced education and international dentist programs will be requested to participate in the survey. The survey will be distributed to approximately 200 faculty. The survey will have questions to identify various communication tools and faculty preferences. A Likert-scale will be utilized to gather data about faculty perception of existing communication, the quality of that communication, and personalized communication choices. Faculty recommendations will be collected using descriptive text.
Results: The anonymous data will be statistically analyzed to recognize individual and collective trends concerning faculty preferences and perceptions about communication with their departments and school administration.
Conclusion: The results of the survey will be utilized to specify any gaps in communication as experienced by the faculty. Recommendations will be presented to the departments and school administration to assist in improving the quality of communication upon evaluation of the data.
