Advanced Laparoscopic Skills Training

Virtual reality training has traditionally only been dedicated to M.D. surgeons. However, now we are working on making this fun, interactive and effective training method available for veterinary surgery procedures. This lab introduces a curriculum that demonstrates all the knowledge and hands-on exercises you need to prepare for a canine laparoscopic cholecystectomy; lapchole.

The participant will use didactic material developed by veterinary surgeons, including videos from live surgery. The instructional material will teach required knowledge and guide participants through the simulated procedure step by step. The participant has the opportunity to perform the simulated cholecystectomy procedure thereafter. In addition, a number of exercises are available to train the participants on laparoscopic skills for the simulated surgery.

This laboratory provides veterinary surgeons and residents 45-minutes of exposure to the veterinary lapchole curriculum. If time permits, additional basic skills training modules are also available. Participants' performance and demographic data will be collected. This data will be used for simulator validation and to provide benchmarks allowing future trainees self-assessment of their performance. This data will also be made available to veterinarians via scientific publications.

After laboratory registration closes, you will receive an email noting your assigned 45 minute timeslot, to take place Wednesday, October 12, between the hours of 8 am—12:30 pm.
