Pathology of the distal interphalangeal joint is common in cattle, and preservation of the claw can increase their productive life. Facilitated ankylosis of the DIP joint is a method to reduce pain associated with joint pathology while salvaging the digit. This seminar will review the indications and complications of facilitated ankylosis in cattle. We will discuss the anatomy of the distal digit and the techniques of this procedure in depth.
