The emergence of antimicrobial resistance is having a profound impact on medical communities. Although evidence is limited, this includes the surgical patient. Presumably, the risk of emergent antimicrobial resistance can be decreased with judicial antimicrobial use. Implications for the surgical patient are not completely understood, but increasingly, traditional approaches to antimicrobial use are being questioned regarding antimicrobial efficacy and impact on emergent resistance. This session will address some of the myths that have guided antimicrobial use in patients (human and veterinary) as well as attempt to scientifically address controversies regarding use of antimicrobials in surgical patients.
