This case-based lecture focuses on tools and strategies for securing the difficult, non-routine intubation. Specifically, discussions include patients with pharyngeal masses, laryngeal scarring, and restricted ability to open the mouth. Review of peri-anesthetic planning and support for patients with a difficult airway, including considerations for sedation and maintenance of anesthesia is covered. The critical importance of end-tidal carbon dioxide monitoring is demonstrated. Any intubation can become difficult. This discussion helps prepare attendees for successfully securing an airway under several challenging circumstances.
