Dr. Collar is an emergency surgeon and PhD candidate at Oregon State University, as well as a locum large animal surgeon at various practices. Dr. Collar is a native of Wisconsin and grew up with a diverse horse background, primarily riding hunter/jumpers. She received her doctorate of veterinary medicine from the University of Minnesota. After completing a surgical internship at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, KY, she worked in the University of California, Davis, J.D. Wheat Veterinary Orthopedic Research Laboratory, focused primarily on the California Horse Racing Board’s Racing Injury Prevention Program. Dr. Collar then completed a three-year residency in large animal surgery at Oregon State University, after which she became a Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons (Large Animal). Her primary research interests continue to focus on musculoskeletal injuries in race and performance horses, with ongoing projects in all aspects of equine medicine. She is currently finishing a PhD in Comparative Health Sciences, teaching veterinary students, and working as an emergency surgeon at Oregon State University. In addition, she works as a locum and relief large animal surgeon, regularly working with practices such as Montana Equine Medical and Surgical Center. Dr. Collar loves all aspects of equine surgery but has a particular interest in minimally invasive surgery such as laparoscopy and arthroscopy.
