Dr. Kurt Weiss is an Associate Professor in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division of Musculoskeletal Oncology. He holds joint appointments in General Surgical Oncology and Pathology. He is the Vice Chair of Translational Research for his Department and serves at the Chair of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) Research Committee. Dr. Weiss is a founding member of the Musculoskeletal Oncology Research Initiative (MORI), Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma (PCS), the Pittsburgh Sarcoma Research Collaborative (PSaRC), and the Pittsburgh Center for Bone and Mineral Research (PCBMR). He is a peer reviewer for multiple journals including the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons for which he has served as a Deputy Editor, Clinical Cancer Research, Sarcoma, and others. He has served on multiple National Cancer Institute (NCI) Study Sections and serves on the Programmatic Panel for the Department of Defense (DOD) Rare Cancers Research Program (RCRP), a program that he helped to establish. Besides serving on the MSTS Executive Committee, he is an active member of the Connective Tissue Oncology Society (CTOS), for which he has served on the Board of Directors.
Dr. Weiss directs the Department’s Musculoskeletal Oncology Laboratory (MOL), a translational laboratory dedicated to the study of sarcoma. His specific areas of interest are sarcoma biology and metastatic potential. His mission is to help develop a world-class translational sarcoma research program at the University of Pittsburgh. As a bone cancer survivor himself, Dr. Weiss brings passion and enthusiasm to the laboratory, clinic, and operating room. Through the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, he is also a proud collaborator with scientists who are trying to understand how other forms of cancer metastasize to the skeleton. He is deeply grateful for the friendships and collaborations he has made with veterinary oncologists and surgeons.
