Dr. Henderson began his professional academic career at Auburn University in 1972 following graduation from the University of Missouri. He retired in 2013 and was awarded Professor Emeritus status. He is board certified in surgery and internal medicine in the subspeciality of clinical oncology. He is an ACVS Founding Fellow, Surgical Oncology. Among his collaborative professional achievements are the first description of Brucella canis associated with discospondylitis (1974), the original description of the tibial compression mechanism which led to advances in cranial cruciate surgery (1978), the interlocking box jejunostomy permitting earlier removal of j-tubes (1995), the tracheal flap tracheostomy for intermediate duration tracheostomy (1999), the first report of proportional margin excisions for mast cell tumors (2000), the first report of the different wound healing of cats compared with dogs (2004), a new perspective of prostatectomy for prostatic carcinoma (2018), and the largest study for the outcome of canine laryngectomy (2021). In the 1980s, Dr. Henderson participated with physician colleagues to introduce the Advanced Trauma Life Support training to the 8 Southeastern states which equipped rural physicians in trauma stabilization techniques prior to patient transport to trauma centers. He also organized a physician training laboratory for laparoscopic cholecystectomy and development of other minimally invasive surgery such as lesser splancnic neurectomy for controlling pain in chronic pancreatitis and cancer. Presently Dr. Henderson lectures at Auburn to students about retirement and continues to serve as a consultant at Moore's Mill Animal Hospital in Auburn, AL and Carriage Hills Animal Hospital in Montgomery, AL.
