Dr. von Pfeil graduated from the Free University Berlin (Germany) in 2001, before being selected for an internship at Kansas State University (KSU). This was followed by the American DVM, a fellowship and surgery residency at Michigan State University (MSU). In 2008, he became a Diplomate with both the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and the European College of Veterinary Surgeons. Following years of sports medicine-related work, mainly sled-dogs, Dr. von Pfeil gained additional board certifications in 2016 with the ACVSMR and in 2021 with the ECVSMR. Based on his contributions to the field of minimally invasive orthopedic surgery, in 2021, Dr. von Pfeil was also designated an ACVS Founding Fellow, Minimally Invasive Surgery (Small Animal Orthopedics).
From 2006-2018, Dr. von Pfeil worked as assistant professor at KSU, adjunct professor at MSU, visiting scientist at the University of Georgia, and as surgeon at veterinary referral hospitals in Alaska, Virginia, and Washington, DC. In 2018, he opened Small Animal Surgery Locum, providing mainly orthopedic locum surgery services to private practices and universities in North America and Europe. Dr. von Pfeil also serves as faculty of the AOVet North America since 2017 and on the editorial boards of several international veterinary surgical journals since 2011. He has developed, presented, and published modifications to multiple surgical techniques, including MIO, resulting in over 60 publications and over 100 presentations.
