While opioids are central for pain control, several other signaling systems are involved in sensory neurotransmission that can be targeted with available pharmacological tools. Emerging therapeutics targeting lipid signaling as well as novel formulations of currently available drugs that prolong their effects are expected to further enhance the clinician’s ability to manage pain in their patients.
