Technician Case Report: Nutritional Management of Feline Obesity Through a Technician-led Consultation and Individualized Calorie-restricted Weight Loss Program

Feline obesity rates are at an all-time high, with more than 60% of cats in the United States thought to be overweight or obese. Weight loss requires a long-term treatment plan taking anywhere from 8 to 24 months or more, to achieve an ideal body weight.

As obesity is a disease, in the first instance the primary doctor should initiate the conversation with the pet owners about their cat’s weight and requirement for weight loss. This in turn initiates a technician-led consultation for detailed discussions on the consequences of their cat being above an ideal weight. The technician will then create an individualized weight management program detailing requirements for an appropriate weight loss diet, feeding quantity, increases to activity and methods for managing food seeking behavior and support the owner throughout the weight loss journey and beyond.

This case describes how a technician-led consultation firstly gathers information in order to then implement a suitable feeding plan for weight loss. It highlights the importance of accurate calculations, management of all relevant case factors and a regular recheck schedule which sets the foundation for safe weight loss in a spayed, female cat with obesity. An extended nutrition assessment and application of that information was used to perform the necessary nutrition calculations. Comparison of diets by key nutrient factors was also required to develop an appropriate feeding plan.

The owners’ nutrition goals and the patient’s dietary sensitivities were also considered to complete the individualized nutrition plan. Client support and education was provided throughout weight loss during scheduled follow-up appointments. Regular contact with patients that have obesity helps maintain good compliance throughout the program, which increases the chances of a successful outcome. The success of the case can be attributed to the owner’s hard work and compliance with the weight loss plan, together with the skills of the technician in managing this case effectively.
