Gabapentin for Analgesia: The Use, Misuse, and Evidence for Efficacy of Gabapentanoids in Small Animal Medicine

This presentation will review the clinical pharmacology of gabapentinoids, concerns of over-prescribing in human and veterinary medicine, and review the current and past literature on evidence for analgesic efficacy in dogs and cats for the treatment of acute and chronic pain. In addition to a discussion of what is known about these drugs, we will also discuss the importance of appropriate analgesic use depending on the type and source of pain, assessment of response to analgesic therapy, and recommendations for different pharmacologic options to treat pain.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participant will be able to list and describe the uses for gabapentinoids that have evidence for efficacy.
Upon completion, participant will gain a sense of the limited evidence for efficacy of gabapentinoids for acute and chronic pain in dogs and cats.
Upon completion, participant will be able to describe how pain scoring systems can be implemented to gauge a response to analgesic therapy, including gabapentin.
