SOTA: Cardio-Renal Syndrome and Diuretic Resistance: Mechanism and clinical implications

Cardio-renal dysfunction is the adverse interaction between heart and kidney. Often the result of a failing heart, cardio-renal dysfunction complicates human heart failure treatment with a high prevalence. Cardio-renal dysfunction effects a broad range of renal functions beyond glomerular filtration. Sodium avidity is also a hallmark of the condition with major implications on treatment, namely diuretic resistance. Given that treatment induced worsening in glomerular filtration rate is often benign and the prognostic importance is outweighed by the therapeutic maneuver that induced it, sodium avidity remains the primary therapeutic target of interest. In this presentation cardio-renal interactions and diuretic resistance, and therapeutic strategies to combat these issues are discussed.
