An increasing number of canine and feline patients are fed a home cooked diet. A major barrier to consistent feeding with this approach is convenience. Ideally a single "pot" could be used to cook raw ingredients together. The presentation will cover the data and mathematical modeling needed to calculate shifts in moisture, fat, fatty acids, and fat soluble nutrients as well as heat degradation of vitamins in such a closed system.

Learning Objectives:

Understand and calculate the impact on overall nutrient composition of fat and moisture shifts when cooking in a closed system or single pot
Appreciate the effect of heat on vitamin bioavailability and how to mathematically correct for the potential variability this introduces
Ability to communicate knowledge of closed system or single pot cooking effects on overall nutrient profile to guide clients considering this preparation method when home cooking dog and cat food
