Hypoalbuminemia occurs commonly in small animals with a variety of disease processes. Some of these patients develop clinical signs secondary to these low serum albumin concentration. This session will review the therapeutic management of these cases, including the use of fluids for oncotic support, novel transfusion products and early enteral nutrition.

Learning Objectives:

Define the common mechanisms underlying development of hypoalbuminemia in small animals
Recall the risks and benefits of adminstering albumin containing products to animals with severe hypoalbuminemia
Recognize alternative approaches to albumin administration, including modification of fluid therapy plans and early enteral nutrition
