Case based review regarding effective equine pain management including knowledge of pain pathways, the need for pain management, practical pharmacology and accurate pain assessment to what tomorrow holds for providing the most effective pain management in our equine patients. The discussion will be based on common painful conditions with an emphasis on what is probably the most challenging case to manage, laminitis. The discussion will include practical pain physiology, general principles of pain management, useful pharmacology for analgesics available to equine practitioners and those in the development pipeline and methods and protocols for the cases presented.

Learning Objectives:

Be able to select analgesics and appropriate techniques for a horse with laminitis and apply these techniques to other painful conditions.
Define the three principles of good pain management that should be considered in every case that is potentially painful, especially for elective procedures.
Discuss the importance of multi-modal pain management and be able to assess equine pain accurately.
