Evidence-based Protein Intake in Cats with IRIS Stage 1 and 2 CKD

There are limited studies on optimum protein intake or protein requirements in cats with IRIS Stage 1 and 2 CKD. Several prospective studies will be presented to determine if renal function is stabilized, based on serum renal biomarker concentrations, with nutritional interventions. Studies are performed in client-owned cats and colony cats.

Learning Objectives:

Renal foods with high quality protein and increased concentrations of essential amino acids are critical for cats with IRIS stage 1 and 2 CKD to maintain BW, BCS, and LBM as these cats have decreased appetite and fluctuations in daily food intake.
Food is a major source of oxidants and diets can be modified to decrease the oxidant burden and proinflammatory effects of certain nutrients. Adding dietary fish oil increases EPA and DHA and protects against excessive inflammatory reactions. Antioxidants (vitamins C and E), L-carnitine, and botanicals (fruit and vegetables) decrease markers of oxidative stress and inflammation.
High protein foods may negatively affect the health of CKD cats even when they have controlled phosphorus levels, by increasing serum concentrations of BUN and microbial uremic toxins, and by increasing renal proteinuria.
