Dr. Reed is a 1976 graduate of the Ohio State University college of veterinary medicine. He completed an Internship and residency training at Michigan State University between 1976 and 1979 and then began an academic career at Washington State University (1979-1983). Dr. Reed moved to the faculty of Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine from 1983-2007 when he retired and moved to Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky, where he remains as a shareholder at this time. He is an Emeritus Professsor at Ohio State and holds an Adjunct Professor title at the University of Kentucky Department of Veterinary Science. His clinical and research interests are dedicated to understanding neurological diseases of horses, in particular Cervical Vertebral Stenosis, Equine Protozoal Meyeloencephalitis and Equine Herpesvirus Myloencephalopathy.
