Client Education to Facilitate Medication Compliance (Interactive Session)

Medication compliance is essential for effective treatment of many conditions.  However, when our patients are less than compliant, it can be difficult to obtain owner compliance for chronic medications.  Taking the time to teach owners both the how and the why of medication administration can make a significant difference on their compliance.  There is substantial data on the human healthcare side about what makes for effective medication counseling.  However, this data is lacking in veterinary medicine.  Despite that, at least one state has implemented regulations that require veterinarians to counsel on all new medications dispensed.  At the time of submission, similar regulations are being considered by additional states.  Therefore, it's important to have an understanding and comfort with effectively providing this information in an efficient manner.  This session will cover the basics of medication counseling utilizing the framework of the California regulations to simplify the concept for practitioners and technicians practicing in any state.
