Antimicrobial stewardship is a complex topic, one aspect of which is duration of therapy of antibiotics. In this session, we will review the evidence that exists for duration of therapy and discuss challenging aspects to consider in bacterial pneumonia. Local risk factors, imaging practices, and aspects of susceptibility interpretation will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

To critically evaluate literature evidence for or against short-course therapy
To identify the gaps in our own knowledge of antimicrobial treatment duration in small animal medicine
To describe the unique challenges in the diagnosis and management of bacterial pneumonia in small animals that may contribute to our own prescribing patterns.
